ABOUT US

Shop Sustainable, Ethical, and Femme this Black Friday

One of my resolutions in 2019 was to be more intentional in two specific ways: 1) creating/allowing/causing less waste and working to preserve this big, beautiful world of ours in any small way I can (except paper straws. I just. I can’t.) and 2) being more intentional about when and where I spend my money. That means choosing to support companies whose missions and products are and do good.

In the spirit of honoring BOTH of those resolutions, I’ve rounded up some of the companies I have and will continue to support for their commitment to sustainability, to supporting their communities, to lifting up and supporting women, and to creating really great, high quality products that are worth your hard earned cash. This year, I hope you’ll consider crossing off your holiday shopping list by supporting businesses that are doing good with your investment.

  • ABLE – this ethical fashion brand had me at “hello”. Comprised of a 95% female staff, their mission is to create high quality jobs for women in developing countries that offer a fair wage and deliver super high value products. The single coolest thing about their company is that they publish their lowest wages to provide accountability of fair compensation both within their own company and the fashion industry as a whole. So inspiring. I’ve long loved this denim jacket and have been eyeing these fab leopard print mules for approximately 12 months.
  • Kate McLeod: The Body STONE – Kate’s commitment is to “intentional manufacturing”, or knowing and seeing every single ingredient that goes into her products. I stumbled on the Body STONE in the midst of months of back-to-back travel, when I was sick of running out of tiny bottles of hotel lotion and wanted a portable product that actually hydrated my supah dry, airplane ruined skin. I figured a solid formula would be the perfect solution. These solid lotion “stones” are an absolute game changer for dry skin (and TSA friendly!) and check every box on the clean, safe, and sustainably-made scale. One of the top items on my gift list, no doubt.
  • Everlane – a leader in the sustainable fashion space, Everlane’s whole schtick is Radical Transparency at a fair price. They commit to high quality closet staples that are ethically sourced and produced and – I can say from personal experience with more than a handful of years-loved items – they deliver on that promise. Special shoutout to beautifully versatile basics like this Alpaca sweater and this washable and affordable and beautiful and recycled cashmere. And if you’re in the market for your go-to denim brand, you’ve found it. You’re welcome.
  • Golden Coil – there are two types of people in this world: the ones who use a paper planner and everyone else who should be. As a proud member of the former, I was tickled pink to finally find the solution to a planner that fits exactly what I’ve been searching for. Year after year, I try to make the pre-templated planners out there work for me and year after year I’m basically shouting DON’T PUT ME IN A BOX. Gah, anyone else have this issue?! Enter: Golden Coil, the perfectly customizable planner that removes all the anxiety of having to choose the creative design of your planner (please don’t make me choose the colors and shapes and text styles and stickers. Please.) and allows you just to customize the meat of the pages, so that you have a layout and format that works for your planning style. They have all kinds of different calendar, lifestyle, goal-related, etc. templates that you can choose based on how you like to plan. Not joking, as soon as I stumbled on this brand, I reached out to the two badass ladies who run the company and was like “please give me your address so I can send you a basket of mini muffins and a bottle of champagne because you are life-savers.” This is your answer to planner-related prayers.
  • Cocokind – if I had a dollar for every time someone has asked me about the “glue stick” I’m applying to my lips and under my eyes… But seriously, Priscilla Tsai – an absolute rockstar in her own right – has cornered the market on affordable, effective, and approachable clean beauty. Please follow her on Instagram for your daily dose of realness and immediately add a MyMatcha stick to your ride-or-die rotation for every moisturizing need. I keep this little wonder stick with me at all times and use as a lip balm, under my eyes to avoid dryness, and on the tops of my cheekbones for a natural, dewy highlight. I’ve repurchased this product more than 10x and have gotten several friends hooked on it as well. Honestly, she doesn’t have a single bad product in her lineup (and and and she usually has some killer Holiday packs that make A+ gifts) – you can’t go wrong.
  • Aurate – ethics (or lack thereof) in fine jewelry development has been something that’s bugged me for a long time. It’s why my wedding set is a sapphire, not a diamond, and it’s a huge part of why I am so supportive of NYC-based Aurate. As if their high-quality pieces, fair pricing, and timeless designs, weren’t enough to make you swoon, the company completely shook-up the fine jewelry marketplace with their approach to ethical production and a commitment to giving a portion of each sale to promoting literacy for children across the US. I truly can’t say enough good things about their mission and the pieces they produce – keep an eye out, they typically have a killer Black Friday/Holiday sale!

I hope these incredible companies inspire you to shop small, sustainable, and ethical this holiday season! Tag us @femme.brain when you support one of our faves!
